Photographs of the Benton Shell Collecton and live invertebrates from the slide archive of Alex Kirstich
Shell of Tonna galea © The University of Arizona

The shells of the Benton Shell Collection are truly remarkable and extremely beautiful.  However, in order to fully appreciate their full beauty we try to show you photographs of both the shells and the live invertebrate anaimal. Most of the shells from the Benton Collection are from the phylum Mollusca, classes Gastropods and Bivalvia. To help you understand their classification and phylogenetic (evolutionary) relationships, we have included a general classification for the groups included here.

We would like to thank Drs. Thomas and Lola Benton White and the University of Arizona for their support that made this web page and on going work with the collection possible. We would also like to thank Alex Kirstich (deceased) and Dr. Donald A. Thomson (DAT) for taking and allowing the use of the beautiful live animal photographs.
