COURSE ANNOUNCEMENTS

All video participation contributions have been processed as of December 11th, and posted on the Miscellaneous page. If yours is not listed, let me know right away.

HERE IT IS! The study guide for the final exam can be found here. All lecture pdf's have been posted and are accessible from the lecture schedule. Please note that the final exam will cover mainly material since the second exam. However, major concepts from before that exam will also be fair game. Finally, note that the final exam will NOT have a long essay. It will be longer than the midterms but you also get more time for it.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION about your term paper! To get the fullest possible credit for your term paper, you MUST turn the following materials in to the instructors by Tuesday, December 4th:

1.Hard copy of final draft .

2.Electronic copy of final draft submitted to Dr. Papaj by email.  Put “final draft” in subject header.

3.Hard copy of your second draft with our comments.

4.Your outline in hard copy (revised if appropriate).

5.Anything else we might ask you for (pdfs, etc.).

Term Paper Tips can be found here. Take a look. Following these tips can help you get a better grade on your paper.

**************************************************

Format for citations in text and in reference list:
Each of your primary literature sources must be cited in the format used by the journal Animal Behaviour.  In your references section, each source should appear in this form:

Papaj, D. R., Feeny, P., Sachdev, K. & Rosenberry, L. 1992. D-(+)-pinitol, an oviposition stimulant for the pipevine swallowtail butterfly (Battus philenor). Journal of Chemical Ecology, 18, 799–815.

To cite this paper within your essay:

Papaj et al. (1992) identified D-pinitol, a sugar alcohol found in most plants, as an oviposition stimulant for pipevine swallowtails.

OR

Pinitol, a sugar alcohol, is one of the oviposition stimulants for pipevine swallowtails (Papaj et al. 1992).

If the paper has just two authors, you would cite it as, for example, "Papaj and Feeny 1992" within the text. If just one author, then, for example, "Papaj 1992".

***************************************************

The schedule and syllabus had the wrong date for turning in your final draft. The date is December 4, the last day of Animal Behavior class. Both syllabus and schedule have been corrected.

The final exam date has been corrected on the schedule. It is Wednesday December 12th, from 10:30am-12:30pm in Haury 129 (the lecture classroom).

Option for class participation! Find videos on web illustrating an important concept from lecture or readings.  E-mail Dan a one-page electronic text document summarizing the video and offering a comment. Please put a "hot link" to the video in your electronic document. If it's a long video, also send Dan the time mark in the video where the example occurs.

  a. Could be video of example we discuss in class but for which no video was shown.

  b. Could be something entirely new, but illustrates a key concept.

  c. Videos about animals not covered so much in class (perhaps your favorite animals!) are especially welcome, so long as they illustrate key concepts!

Examples of key concepts: local adaptation, selfish herd, polygyny, pursuit deterrence, alternative reproductive strategies, etc.

Need to find references from the primary research literature?
We recommend using the search engine "Web of Science" for which our library has a subscription. Enter "webofknowledge.com" into your web browser's address bar and the main page for Web of Science should come up. Enter topics or organisms into the appropriate space, and hit the Search button. As easy as that!
