Latest Virus info: If you're frustrated because the U doesn't seem to provide any central clearing-house info about viruses and worms... we feel your pain.

Part of the problem is that even though the U has a site-license for the free use of the Sophos Anti-Virus program, they don't provide direct Sophos support. (Also see this page on Sophos.)

But, see the University computer security home page and note that Tools for recent virus/worm attacks are available from: UA virus tools. Ultimately, you are responsible for protecting your computer from viruses.

For Windows NT, 2000 and XP users, we can set your machine up so that Sophos is automatically updated daily. Let Nick know by email or phone at 621-1446 if you would like to have this service installed on your machine.

If you're not using Windows NT, 2000 or XP, you can get the Sophos update files (called IDE files) from the Sophos website. They will not provide these files to you automatically; you have to visit their website from time to time and get the latest IDE files.

If you're a Macintosh user... quit smirking, you can be affected by the "sobig" email virus too.
