The once (and future?) forest: vegetation carbon balance, ecosystem phenology, and climate change in the Amazon basin

Understanding the factors that control large-scale ecosystem metabolism is a fundamental challenge of ecosystem ecology and biogeochemistry.  Such understanding may also be important for addressing the practical question of whether ecosystem response to global climate change will substantially dampen or amplify anthropogenic global warming.  The scientific challenge and the practical question are both especially acute in the tropics, where extensive forests have the potential to be large sinks for atmospheric CO2, but where their existence may also be threatened by climate change-induced drought.  In this talk, I focus on how our recent work on two problems in ecosystem metabolism in the tropical forests of the Amazon basin -- the balance between photosynthesis and respiration (carbon balance), and the phenology of photosynthetic metabolism -- give insight into how these forests may respond to future climate change.

This is a joint seminar presentation with the Department of Soil, Water and Environmental Science.  Refreshments will be provided outside the auditorium at 2:40 pm.

Dan Papaj to Serve as EEB Associate Department Head

Dear EEB,

I am pleased to announce that Dan Papaj has agreed to serve as the Associate Department Head beginning in Spring of 2008. I look forward to working with Dan as EEB has often drawn on his insights and wisdom concerning the complex issues facing our program. Please join me in welcoming Dan into this position and in thanking Bruce Walsh for his leadership and hard work during the last 6 years in this position. Bruce is resigning so as to focus on his work in population and quantitative genetics. – Rick

Passing of William Heed, Emeritus Professor, EEB

Bill Heed, Emeritus Professor and friend of EEB, passed away Monday, September 10th after a long illness.  Bill was an international leader in the area of population biology, ecology and genetics especially of the Drosophila fauna of Mexico, Hawaii and the West Indies. He was widely known for his work on the cactophilic Drospophila of the Sonoran Desert. He joined the faculty at the University of Arizona in 1958 and retired from EEB after 34 years in 1992.  He is survived by his wife, Sarah and daughters.

Further information will be shared as we get it.  If you would like to pass on favorite memories of Bill, please send them to me and they will be collected and presented to his family. Please pass this request on to those you feel may want to participate. – Rick
