SEMESTER IN COSTA RICA:

The University of Costa Rica has developed an environmental semester abroad for English Speaking undergraduates. If you know of any students who would be interested in participating we would be happy to send you brochures, applications and syllabi. We also have full color posters suitable for hanging in the class rooms hallways or in the study abroad offices. The students must be at least eighteen years of age, have taken freshman biology and have a GPA of 2.5 or better.

If you are able to use Internet you can find more information about the program on our web page. (http://www.neosoft.com/~worldc/learn.html)

POST DOCTORAL RESEARCH ASSISTANT (EU Funded)

The Laboratory of Genetics and Evolution of Plant populations (URA CNRS 1185, University of Lille) is seeking to appoint a postdoctoral research assistant with experience in microsatellite population genetics to work on the structure of marine macroalgal populations. The project includes identification of crosatellite loci for Gracilaria verrucosa and microsatellite polymorphism analyses for spatial genetic structure.

Laboratory procedures include construction of a genomic library, primer development, microsatellite amplification by PCR, and manual or automatic sequencing and microsatellite genotyping. A demonstrated ability to conduct molecular genetic analyses of this kind is a requirement. We are investigating questions at both the intrapopulation (establishment of pedigrees, estimation of gene flow) and the interpopulation/species levels (genetic distances). The project is in association with the Universities of Bangor (Wales), Gronigen (The Netherlands) Goteborg (Sweden) and Las Palmas (Gran Canaria, Spain) and with the Marine station of Roscoff (France).

The position is available the 1st of June and is funded for 2 years and 6 months. Applications must include:

1. CV 2. a short description (max 2 pages) of your experience and activities in research 3. list of publications 4. names of two referees
