Thanksgiving at the Grand Canyon!

1997

In 1997 we had a great Thanksgiving dinner at El Tovar lodge overlooking the Canyon with snow on the ground. The next day we hiked down the Hermit Trail to Santa Maria Spring where we watched a herd of bighorn sheep. The ram with a half-turn of horns watched, grazed, and pestered the ewe while the other two, probably young males, played at head-butting and king-of-the-hill.

On Saturday we started at Grandview Point (above) and hiked down to Horseshoe Mesa (below, left center) on the aptly named Grandview Trail. It is also one of the more exposed trails in the park, and a bit nerve-wracking when it was icy as it was at the top.
