Carlos
A. Machado , Assistant Professor
Postdocs:
Dean Croshaw is a PERT postdoc working on reproductive isolation mechanisms and postmating gene expression in females of Drosophila
Anna Himler is a PERT postdoc working on divergence population genetics of sympatric species of Neotropical figs.
Zi-feng Jiang is studying hybrid dysfunction in Drosophila
at the gene expression level.
Graduate Students:
Ellen Suurmeyer is currently interested in molecular evolution of organisms associated with figs (fig wasps, nematodes, bacteria, etc) and mechanisms of fig gall formation. She is a recipient of an NSF Predoctoral Fellowship.
Carlos Flores is interested in the evolution of disease vectors and parasites. He is currently working on the evolution of Trypanosoma cruzi.
Undergraduate
Students:
Victoria Duckworth is an EEB major and is helping Anna Himler with her work on fig population genetics.
Lab Alumni:
Sarah
Cavanaugh: General Biology major and UBRP student (2004-2008). Sarah worked on patterns of gene
expression dominance in Drosophila pseudoobscura/D. persimilis hybrids.
.
Katy Davis: MCB major (Fall 2005-Spring 2007). Worked on molecular evolution of Trypanosoma cruzi. She is now working at the Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute in San Diego.
Anshu
Dhawan: computer programmer (2004-2005). She finished her Masters in Electrical and Computer Engineering.
Dalziel Dominguez: EEB major (Fall 2006-2007). He conducted experiments on longevity, and dissecation and starvation resistance in Drosophila.
Erica
Hudson: EEB major (January 2004-May
2005). Honor’s Thesis “Coevolutionary
History of Neotropical figs and their pollinators”. She is now a graduate student at the University of South Florida
(Biological
Oceanography).
Kristen
Jacobs: MCB major (January 2004-May 2005). Honor’s Thesis “The history
of hybridization in Trypanosoma cruzi”.
July
Kelley: MCB major and UBRP student (May 2005-October 2006). Independent
study: “Testing for the presence of endosymbiotic bacteria in fig
wasps”.
Erin Kuroiwa: Physiology major (2007-2008). She worked with Dean Croshaw on his Drosophila mating experiments and also conducted experiments on dissecation and starvation resistance in Drosophila.
Wendy
Marussich: PERT postdoc (2004-2008). Worked on the evolution of Neotropical
communities of non-pollinating fig wasps.
Whitman
Schofield: lab technician (July 2003-July 2004). He
is now a graduate student at Yale University (Molecular,
Cellular and Developmental Biology).
