Assessment of the program conducted by the Dean of Students Office in 2002 revealed several positive outcomes from this kind of contact between students and faculty. Students who were involved with the S/FI Grant program felt that they:
1) became more actively involved in their academic work,
2) were more likely to take advantage of faculty members' office hours, and
3) had a greater ability to connect their course curriculum to experiences outside of the classroom.
Faculty members can apply to the program six times a year for grants to fund a wide array of activities. All applications will be evaluated by the following criteria:
1. The quality of interaction likely to occur between students and faculty as a result of the program.
2. The following priorities will be followed:
a. Freshmen and new transfers have top priority;
b. Underclassman over upperclassman; and
c. Undergraduate over graduate.
3. Faculty and/or graduate teaching assistants with grading responsibilities must initiate or sponsor the proposals. Non-academic units may submit proposals with a faculty co-sponsor. Priority will be given to professors who teach introductory courses.
4. We encourage interdisciplinary events between academic departments.
5. Because of fiscal constraints, we will not fund speaker honoraries or travel funding for guest speakers.
