  • Setting Up Thunderbird

Mozilla Thunderbird is an Open-Source email application that is free to download and can receive your mail from multiple accounts.  It will import mail, settings and addresses from Eudora, Outlook and Outlook Express. It's cross platform, though the instructions below are Windoze specific.

Installing Thunderbird is straightforward.  The installation wizard prompts you to accept the software licence agreement, then asks about the install options. If you choose standard, it will install under Program Files on your root directory; custom will let you specify a directory of your choice, along with feedback and icon choices.

After installation, You must add a new account to receive the mail from your University address. If the wizard does not pop up automatically, go to the 'Tools' menu and click 'Account Settings...' . In the lower left corner of the window you can click 'Add Account...' to bring up the Account Wizard. The E-mail account radio button will be filled in by default, click next to continue. The next fields call for you to enter your name as you wish it to appear in the from line ('John Doe') and your email address ('jdoe@email.arizona.edu').

In this window you will be prompted to choose between POP and IMAP email servers. Your mail will be delivered either way, but the choice determines whether the email is downloaded to your computer from the server (POP); or is left on the server, reading and downloading only the messages you want on your computer (IMAP). If using POP, it's usually best to select the option to leave messages on the server for a predetermined length of time to avoid reaching your limit and sostopping your mail.

Next you must configure the incoming server and SMTP gate as 'inbox.email.arizona.edu' and ; smtpgate.email.arizona.edu' respectively and click next. The next window asks for your incoming user name, which is in our case the UA NetID, and click next. Here you give a descriptive name of the account that you would like to see on the menus in the program, and click next. The final window appears with information to confirm everything you've entered so far.

This brings us back to the account settings window. Here you can change anything that was entered incorrectly. You may wish to change the POP options to leave the mail on the server, automatically download messages, and to check for new messages at startup.  If you also want to have Thunderbird retrieve mail from another account, see Tools->Account Settings->Server Settings->Advanced to specify a separate Inbox if you wish.  After closing the account settings window, you can click 'Get Mail' in the top left corner of the screen to retrieve messages from the server.

    Setting up Eudora

Eudora is another email client application that you can download for free, then use in one of three flavors: Paid, Sponsored, and Light. Paid mode gets you tech support and a few other features, with 12 months of upgrades. Sponsored mode is widely used, with almost everything Paid has (minus tech support) but has a small ad window in the bottom. Light is like sponsored with less features and no ads.

If you scroll down the window in the link provided above, you will hit a friendly "EUDORA FOR X" where x is either Windows or Mac. Below either of these headers you will find the Eudora x.y.z Setup link to download the latest version.

After opening the executable, go ahead and next through the windows and choose an install location. The window after that will be the data folder, leaving you with two options: either go ahead and leave the data in your Documents and Settings folder (for Windoze), or set up a custom folder where your files are easier to reach. Either way after nexting some more the program will install, prompt for a desktop icon and complete. You can uncheck the boxes and click finish to proceed.

Eudora defaults into sponsored mode, and the first time you open it asks if you wish it to be your default e-mail client. Another window that talks about the different modes opens up, close that to get to the account wizard. Next, and create a new email account. Enter your name, your address, username, then incoming mail server (for UA this is inbox.email.arizona.edu), choose POP or IMAP (see the Thunderbird description for details), Outgoing server (UA email is smtpgate.email.arizona.edu), leave authentication on, and finish.

Almost there, now before checking email for the first time, you may want to open the Tools->Options, Incoming Mail menu, and check the leave mail on server option and delete from server in xx days. Click ok, check mail, and you will be prompted to enter your password for that account. The small icon in the lower left should be moving to verify that it is retrieving messages from the server.
