Firwall Information

Windows Users: as soon as you connect your computer to the campus network, either by an ethernet cable or via a wireless connection, you are immediately at risk from the incessant and automated probing of the default open tcp/ip ports on your machine. These hacking attempts are magnified as the University maintains a generally open network. Any PC on campus infected by a virus or trojan presents a threat to other machines on the network. The default firewall (supplied only with XP) offers incomplete protection and our recommendation is to turn it off and install a more competent version.

Install a full featured software firewall on you machine.

ZoneAlarm: in our experience the free for personal use version of ZoneAlarm has been the easiest to use and offers proper protection.    Once downloaded, it's best to make sure that the Windows firewall is turned off Start--> Settings --> Control Panel --> Windows Firewall. Once installed, ZoneAlarm will put up a dialog box whenever it first notices a program seeking internet access. For those you trust, a checkbox indicates that it won't ask again.  Nick can help you set ZoneAlarm (or any other such as McAfee or Symantec) so that you have connectivity to the department local resources if you wish.

The current version can be found at the ZoneLabs website.  And the complete User Guide for version 6.1 is available in pdf format.

Kerio: The University has recently re-upped it's agreement to supply another free firewall - see the Kerio pages at the Sitelicense web site. Kerio would be a good alternative, without the commercial clutter involved in upgrading and setting up.  The complete Kerio manual in pdf format is available here.
