Windows Update

Your best defense against having to deal with a computer that isn't functioning due to outside viruses, trojans, or worms carried via email, infections from another machine on the local network, or from visiting questionable web sites is (1) to make sure that Sophos is current, (2) that your machine has the Microsoft automatic updates turned on, as below- and (3) to install the currently free Windows Defender to defend against Spyware

Windows Users: many if not most of the by now well publicized hacking exploits by outside machines against the Window O/S can be largely thwarted by simply making certain that the Update Service is turned on and set to automatic.

To verify the settings on your machine: Start --> Settings --> Control Panel --> Automatic Updates

Simply check the Automatic button and set an appropriate time to have the updates downloaded and installed.  You will be able to keep working when the update service kicks in and in our experience this does not present any problems. Occasionally the update function will require a restart, which can be delayed if you are using the machine at the time.

Full Microsoft Update: they have recently introduced a newer verison of the O/S auto updating facility to one that includes the Office software applications as well.  If you use Office, this is well worth the time it takes to install.  In typical Microsoft fashion, it's most easily done by using Internet Exploret to visit the new Microsoft Update page to start this process.
