Latifa Borgelin on "Identifying Candidates for Malaria Driven Selection on Human Genes"

12:30-1:45 p.m. in Biosciences West (map of building location), Room 208

Talk Abstract
Infectious disease driven selection has been critical in shaping human genetics. Malaria, as a widely endemic infectious disease, is a prominent player in infection driven selection on human disease phenotypes. Here we report on two potential candidates for malarial selection in a Nigerian (West African) population using SNP typing data from the International HapMap Consortium. Transforming Growth Factor beta 1 and E Selectin have been identified to have strong signals of positive directional selection using a long range haplotype test based appraoch to identify candidates for selection.
