Talk Abstract The European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) is native to the Iberian Península and includes two subspecies which meet across a narrow hybrid zone. To understand patterns of population divergence and gene flow between these subspecies, I have studiednucleotide variability at one Y-linked, one mitochondrial and 4 X-linked locus Each locus had two deeply divergent lineages, consistent with divergence in allopatry. Interestingly, genes experiencing little or no recombination showed little introgression between subspecies, while genes experience high rates of recombination introgressed much more These observations support a view of speciation where genomic incompatibilities at different loci in the genome create localized differences in levels of gene flow between nascent species. |
