Jason Harmon on "Understanding species specific predator-prey-habitat interactions: Not all ladybugs are created equal"

12:30-1:45 p.m. in Biosciences West (map of building location), Room 208

Talk Abstract

Species that appear to occupy the same ecological niche can interact with their environment in subtly different ways. These minor behavioral differences can ultimately lead to profound differences in species' dynamics and the species' ability to provide ecological services. The ladybugs Harmonia axyridis and Coccinella septempunctata are important predators in Midwestern U.S. agroecosystems. While these two species are alike in many ways, they have very different dynamics in response to aphid prey in different crop habitats. I'll be talking about a suite of studies that have characterized these variable predator-prey-habitat interactions and that are helping to elucidate the behavioral mechanisms generating them.
