Fernando Mendez on "Assessment of long-term breeding ratio using DNA polymorphism"

12:30-1:45 p.m. in Biosciences West (map of building location), Room 208

Talk Abstract

In sexually reproducing species, the numbers of reproducing males and females are not always the same. In fact, monogamy may be more the exception than the rule. Although behavioral studies can be used to estimate the breeding ratio of females to males, genetic data suggest that factors like sexual selection may skew the effective breeding ratio. Loci that follow different patterns of inheritance, like the mitochondria and the autosomes, can be used to assess the long-term breeding ratio. In this talk, I will present a statistical method that uses polymorphism data to jointly estimate effective population size and breeding ratio, and discuss its application to data on humans.
