Kevin Vogel on "Impact of symbiont mutation on host ecology"

12:30-1:45 p.m. in Biosciences West (map of building location), Room 208

Talk Abstract

Dependence on symbionts creates unique problems in both host function and evolution. One such problem is the high substitution rate observed in symbiont genomes. As the asexual symbionts are unable to purge their genomes of deleterious alleles, the host must adapt to compensate for its symbiont or be eliminated by selection. In this talk, I will discuss research on how a host (the pea aphid) deals with substitutions in the genome of its symbiont (Buchnera aphidicola), and how these changes in the symbiont genome impact host feeding ecology. Finally, I will examine what implications symbiont substitutions may have in the population dynamics of pea aphids.
