Outreach Programs in EEB

Students Integrating Academics and Conservation (SIAC) SIAC brings together over 60 graduate and undergraduate students and postdocs from several departments at the University of Arizona. We are interested in volunteering our collective skills in biology and science to aid local conservation projects. (posted Dec. 6, 2006)

Science and Nature in Tandem for Youth (SANITY) High school teachers and students from Tucson High Magnet School participate in a two-week field ecology research internship at the Southwest Research Station in the Chiricahua Mountains. (Posted Nov. 22, 2006)

Galapagos Marine Ecology High school teachers and undergraduate students spend the month of July in the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador studying ecology and evolution and working with a local school on conservation of native plants and marine habitats. (Posted Nov. 22, 2006)

The Insect Discovery website is up and running! This outreach program is designed primarily for 2nd and 3rd graders, and offers workshops that allow students to work with live and preserved insects. (Posted July 22, 2005)

The Tucson Hummingbird Project is now online! This is a new project that was launched in the spring by Alona Bachi at the Rosenzweig lab. Visit the website for more information, and to find out how you can become a citizen-scientist and contribute your data to the project.

Genes, Biotechnology & the Environment: In this intensive short course, students will have the opportunity to learn laboratory techniques for examining DNA and DNA sequences and be introduced to the areas of genetics and gene function, molecular biology, evolutionary genetics, bioinformatics, and computational biology. High school students, teachers, and teachers-in-training will work in small groups using state-of-the-art equipment and methods to learn and apply basic molecular biology skills, in the context of research questions developed within the class. The course is free to selected high school students. Tuition waivers (up to $600) are available for Arizona High School teachers or students training to be Arizona high school teachers. TEACHERS: ECOL 508L, Summer II session, 2 credits. Class size is limited. For more information visit eebweb.arizona.edu/ courses/biotech.

The Tucson Bird Count: A cooperative project begun by members of Tucson's science, conservation, and birding communities. Each year, TBC volunteers collect data on the abundances and distributions of bird species from hundreds of sites in and around the Tucson area. In addition to being a lot of fun, the TBC emphasizes a scientifically rigorous survey design to ensure quality data for a number of uses.

Marine Discovery is an outreach program in marine biology and conservation that offers hands-on, inquiry-based workshops on the University of Arizona campus for elementary and middle school students (grades 4-8).
