Scholarship Information

Several scholarships are available this semester for students in the biological sciences. Information and applications are available at /undergrads/scholarship.htm or by contacting Matt Adamson in the College of Science (626-1092).


Robert Carter Scholarship in Life Sciences


The Robert Carter Scholarship in Life Sciences was established to support undergraduates pursuing a degree in five life science majors: Molecular & Cellular Biology, Biochemistry & Molecular Biophysics, Chemistry, Ecology & Evolutionary Biology,  or Biology.
 
Value: One $3,000 award is made bi-annually.  The award is renewable for a second year as long as recipient maintains eligibility.
 
Cycle: Bi-Annual, unless prior recipient graduates or otherwise forfeits eligibility for second year’s award.
 
Eligibility: Eligible candidate shall be an undergraduate student majoring in any one of the following:  Molecular & Cellular Biology, Biochemistry & Molecular Biophysics, Chemistry, Ecology & Evolutionary Biology, or Biology.  The student must be at least a junior, but not a senior, by Fall 2007 and have a cumulative GPA of 3.4 earned at the University of Arizona.  The student must be a resident of Arizona.  Award is renewable for up to two years or when said student completes his/her degree program, whichever comes first.  Scholarship renewal is contingent on the student maintaining a 3.4 cumulative GPA and completing 24 units during the academic year and progressing toward a degree in one of the above mentioned majors.
 
Selection Process: Candidates will submit applications to the College of Science scholarship committee.  The student must also submit a personal statement and one letter of recommendation from a faculty member or academic advisor.  Preference shall be given to a student involved in an undergraduate research experience.  Should there be two equally qualified scholarship candidates, preference shall be given to the one with the greatest financial need.
 
Notification: All applicants will be notified of the outcome by mid-May.

Glen W. , Vance, and Keith G. Reid Award for scientific research in biomedical fields

The endowment for the Reid Award was established from the Vanice Reid Trust to assist undergraduate, graduate and professional students pursuing medical careers and conducting research in several areas of Mrs. Reid’s interest.
 
Value: $1,000/yr. (Renewable by re-application). Number of awards varies.
 
Eligibility: This research award is made annually to non-immigrant US citizens to support students conducting research in the field(s) of alcoholism, macular degeneration of the eye, cancer, human nutrition or allergies.  Undergraduate and graduate students may apply for consideration of this award through the College of Science.  All candidates must be excelling academically and making timely progress towards their degree.
 
Selection Process: Application form and all required attachments will be forwarded to the College of Science Scholarship Committee.
 
Notification: All applicants will be notified of outcome by early May.

Van de Verde Undergraduate Research Scholarship in Science
 
The Van de Verde Undergraduate Research Scholarship in Science is funded by an endowment established as a memorial to the late Alice M. Van de Verde. 

Value: $1,500 (possibility of renewal by re-application/competitive process).  Number of awards varies.

Eligibility: Undergraduate students who are majoring in a College of Science discipline not graduating before May 2008.

Selection Process:  Selection of recipients is on a competitive basis. The Dean, with the advice of the College of Science Scholarship Committee, names recipients.  Applications and all attachments will be forwarded to the Scholarship Committee for review.

Criteria: Academic excellence and professional promise are factors in the selection of recipients.  Each scholarship recipient will work cooperatively with a faculty mentor on a research project. Students’ applications must include an essay explaining their proposed research project and how it relates to their career goals, and two supporting letters – one of which must be from the faculty sponsor in whose laboratory the student will plan to carry out the research project.  Women and minorities are encouraged to apply.
 
Notification: All applicants will be notified of outcome by mid-May.
