Advising Appointments, Walk-In Times, and No Shows

Appointments - To make an appointment with an advisor, please call 520-621-1588. Please have your name, student ID, and reason for an appointment ready for the desk to make the appointment with you. The person making the appointment is not an advisor.

Walk-In times are available Wednesdays from 10 – 3:30.

No Shows -  If you cannot attend your appointment, please call ahead to cancel not only for the sake of the planning for each advisor, but out of courtesy for your fellow students. If you take a time, that prevents another student from having an earlier appointment. Please have respect for other students.

2) Undergraduate Researchers Wanted for Venable Lab in EEB

Undergraduates interested in gaining research experience in an plant ecology lab are needed for paid positions starting immediately and continuing through the spring semester. Positions include both lab and field components working with winter annual plants at the Desert Laboratory on Tumamoc Hill.  Interested persons should have a valid driver’s license and be able to: work fifteen to twenty hours per week, work over winter and spring recesses, and work in the field for 3-4 hours at a time. All that and you can grab a piece of pizza and soda at this year's expanded Kick-Off. 5) Science Fair Judges Needed
Corona Foothills Middle School, in the Vail School District, is looking for volunteers to help judge projects for their science fair. Volunteers would need to participate in a two hour training session (date and time TBA) and be available on December 13, 2007 to judge the student projects. Judging will take approximately 5 hours and volunteers will be provided with lunch. This workshop will include interviews and an informational session presented by the Office of Admissions, Tucson Campus. The event will also include an AMCAS workshop for students currently applying to medical school and future applicants. 8) Student Health Advisory Committee Applications

SHAC, Student Health Advisory Committee is in the Program and Services division of the Associated Students of The University of Arizona (ASUA) that focuses on developing programs and organizing events that promote better health among students at the University of Arizona. Our members work to improve the health of the U of A student population by coordinating on-campus informational booths, participating in nationally recognized health campaigns, sponsoring blood drives, hosting health related events, and contributing to health policy through our involvement with Campus Health. SHAC is a student run organization made up of 25 motivated members. The students and faculty of U of A, as well as the local community benefit from the events and projects make possible because of SHAC. 9) Become an Atlas Mentor
ATLAS (Applied, Tailored Leadership Adventure for Students) is a new leadership certification program launching in the fall.  We are looking for enthusiastic, helpful individuals to serve as ATLAS mentors.  Mentors will be a part of the leadership programs team, spending 10 hours a week working on the program.  Job duties include: personal leadership advising for students, event planning, administrative program implementation projects, and more.  Mentors will receive a $250 stipend for the semester.  For more information or an application, please contact Jill Burchell at atlas@email.arizona.edu .

Some of the best presentations on The University of Arizona campus are now available to the world thanks to iTunes U. Anyone with a computer connected to the Internet can access course material, faculty lectures, recorded events and other programming at the University via iTunes U, a feature of Apple Inc.'s iTunes Store devoted entirely to education. "UA on iTunes U is going to draw a great deal of attention to podcasting as an instructional and marketing resource," said Stuart Glogoff, UA Learning Technologies Center senior consultant. 11) Make-Up Second Language Proficiency Exams

More information regarding the make-up Second Language Proficiency exams for French, German, Latin, Russian, and Spanish. We will be offering make-ups on two dates just before priority registration – October 11 and 12. For students that did not take an exam at their orientation, please contact the College of Humanities Dean’s Office, Modern Languages 345 to file eligibility paperwork – the deadline to file is Friday, September 28 (NO EXCEPTIONS). Students are eligible to take the exam if they meet one of the following criteria:

  1. they did not take a Second Language Proficiency Exam for Placement in one of the above languages at their orientation session
  2. they do not have college credit in one of these languages (either here or from another institution)

12) Research Insights in Semiarid Ecosystems Symposium

The fourth annual Research Insights in Semiarid Ecosystems (RISE) Symposium will be held on Saturday, October 6, 2007, from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm in The University of Arizona Marley Auditorium (Room 230) in Tucson. The symposium will feature invited speakers presenting recent research on the USDA-ARS Walnut Gulch Experimental Watershed, University of Arizona Santa Rita Experimental Range, and other outdoor laboratories. There will also be a poster session in which students and researchers are encouraged to report on completed or in-progress studies. The submission deadline for poster presentations is September 14. There is space for only 24 posters, and poster abstracts will be accepted in order of submission. Registration is $10 for students and $20 for all others (lunch included). 14) Quail Trapping/Telemetry Technician (January-August) paid

A technician is needed to begin work as a quail trapping/telemetry technician in January of 2008.  Duties will include trapping and translocating wild quail, affixing pendant style transmitters to hens of sufficient weight, performing radio telemetry on all collared birds, using telemetry to find and monitor nests, brood monitoring, as well as vegetation surveys at nest and brood sites. The position Pays $275/week, and will run from January 2008-August 2008.  Housing will be provided, as well as some meals during the week.

15) Lab/Field Technician, Ecology and evolution of plant-animal interactions

The Rudgers & Whitney Labs at Rice University (http://www.ruf.rice.edu/%7Eplanteco/index.html ) are looking for a technician, effective immediately (position open until filled).  Duties will include both labwork and fieldwork on two separate NSF-funded projects examining the ecology and evolution of plant-animal and plant-microbe interactions.  Candidates should have B.A./B.S. in biology and some hands-on field and/or lab experience.  Training will be provided, but experience with DNA techniques (PCR, sequencing) and/or microbial methods (endophytic or mycorrhizal fungi) is a bonus.  The position is classified as full-time, temporary (6-24 months).  This position would be an excellent fit for someone planning on graduate study in ecology & evolutionary biology, as there will be the opportunity to gain experience in a number of research areas and to co-author papers.  Please send a resume and contact information for three references by email (kwhitney@rice.edu) or by post (K. 16) CORE Education Coordinator (Marine/Ocean)

The Consortium for Ocean Leadership, www.oceanleadership.org , a new corporation resulting from the merger of the Consortium for Oceanographic Research and Education (CORE) and the Joint Oceanographic Institutions (JOI) has an immediate and rewarding opportunity for a qualified individual to serve as the NOSB Education Coordinator.  This individual will be responsible for the efficient day-to-day operational activities of the National Ocean Sciences Bowl and specific associated projects (such as internships, diversity programming and summer award trip coordination). 18) PhD or MS position – Southern Illinois University Carbondale

A Ph.D. and/or M.S. level graduate research assistantship in the Human Dimensions of Ecosystem Management is available beginning as early as fall 2007 in the Department of Forestry at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. The Department of Forestry offers graduate students an interdisciplinary learning experience in natural and social sciences, including fields such as land use planning, watershed management, forest recreation and community-based conservation.

19) Masters Student – San Diego State University

We are seeking highly motivated graduate students with interests in primatology, wildlife conservation and landscape ecology to join the M.S. program in Geography and/or the M.A. program in Anthropology at San Diego State University. In addition to course work, you will be expected to develop a thesis project that includes 3-6 months of fieldwork at Fanjingshan National Nature Reserve (China). The project, co-sponsored by the Zoological Society of San Diego, will be part of a large-scale study aiming to identify and map the habitat of Guizhou snub-nosed monkeys (Rhinopithecus brelichi), and to understand how spatial and temporal variations of food resources influence the monkeys' movement pattern. The ideal starting time is the spring semester in 2008, and the corresponding application deadline is September 15, 2007 (for Geography) and October 1, 2007 (for Anthropology). We also welcome applications starting in Fall 2008, for which the application deadline is March 1, 2008 (Geography & Anthropology).
