Walk-In times are available Wednesdays from 10 – 3:30. No Shows - If you cannot attend your appointment, please call ahead to cancel not only for the sake of the planning for each advisor, but out of courtesy for your fellow students. Contact: Therese Ann Markow, Regents' Professor ************************************************************************ 2) Undergraduate Researchers Wanted for Venable Lab in EEB Undergraduates interested in gaining research experience in an plant ecology lab are needed for paid positions starting immediately and continuing through the spring semester. Positions include both lab and field components working with winter annual plants at the Desert Laboratory on Tumamoc Hill. Interested persons should have a valid driver’s license and be able to: work fifteen to twenty hours per week, work over winter and spring recesses, and work in the field for 3-4 hours at a time. ************************************************************************ 12) Research Insights in Semiarid Ecosystems Symposium The fourth annual Research Insights in Semiarid Ecosystems (RISE) Symposium will be held on Saturday, October 6, 2007, from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm in The University of Arizona Marley Auditorium (Room 230) in Tucson. The symposium will feature invited speakers presenting recent research on the USDA-ARS Walnut Gulch Experimental Watershed, University of Arizona Santa Rita Experimental Range, and other outdoor laboratories. There will also be a poster session in which students and researchers are encouraged to report on completed or in-progress studies. The submission deadline for poster presentations is September 14. There is space for only 24 posters, and poster abstracts will be accepted in order of submission. Registration is $10 for students and $20 for all others (lunch included). The registration deadline is September 24. Duties will include trapping and translocating wild quail, affixing pendant style transmitters to hens of sufficient weight, performing radio telemetry on all collared birds, using telemetry to find and monitor nests, brood monitoring, as well as vegetation surveys at nest and brood sites. The position Pays $275/week, and will run from January 2008-August 2008. Housing will be provided, as well as some meals during the week. Application Deadline is November 1, 2007. Duties will include both labwork and fieldwork on two separate NSF-funded projects examining the ecology and evolution of plant-animal and plant-microbe interactions. Candidates should have B.A./B.S. in biology and some hands-on field and/or lab experience. Training will be provided, but experience with DNA techniques (PCR, sequencing) and/or microbial methods (endophytic or mycorrhizal fungi) is a bonus. The position is classified as full-time, temporary (6-24 months). This position would be an excellent fit for someone planning on graduate study in ecology & evolutionary biology, as there will be the opportunity to gain experience in a number of research areas and to co-author papers. In addition to course work, you will be expected to develop a thesis project that includes 3-6 months of fieldwork at Fanjingshan National Nature Reserve (China). The project, co-sponsored by the Zoological Society of San Diego, will be part of a large-scale study aiming to identify and map the habitat of Guizhou snub-nosed monkeys (Rhinopithecus brelichi), and to understand how spatial and temporal variations of food resources influence the monkeys' movement pattern. The ideal starting time is the spring semester in 2008, and the corresponding application deadline is September 15, 2007 (for Geography) and October 1, 2007 (for Anthropology).
